Product Notes:
Cranberries are frequently used to help prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs) in both men and women because there's something in them that prevents E. coli (the type of bacteria that usually causes them) from sticking to the bladder walls, so they'll just get flushed out. But that doesn't happen overnight, so unless you use a high quality whole food concentrate like this, you'd need to consume a lot of cranberries or cranberry juice every day, and the juices are typically watered down and loaded up with a lot of extra sugar, which isn't good for you.
Cranberries have many nutritional benefits, including being very high in antioxidants. But when it comes to UTIs, their most important constituent is likely proanthocyanidins (PACs), which appear to be able to obstruct those pathogenic E. coli's ability to adhere to the epithelial cells in the urinary tract. The highly concentrated organic Cran Naturelle™ cranberry powder in these products delivers the highest level of proanthocyanidins (PACs) of any natural cranberry product, while still maintaining the natural integrity of the fruit. The 500 mg of Cran Naturelle in each capsule is equivalent to consuming 18 grams of fresh cranberry fruit solids (and you can get it here without all the added sugars or calories you'd get from cranberry juice), and provides 135 mg of PACs per serving, which greatly surpasses what's found in leading brands.
Cran Naturelle is supplied by Fruit d'Or Nutraceuticals, the world's largest processor and supplier of organic cranberries and wild blueberries, based in Quebec. Fruit d'Or has raised the bar for quality in this industry, by being vertically integrated from farm to table: controlling the quality of their ingredients right from the seed to the harvest all the way to the finished products, with extensive testing and standardization along the way. In order to ensure the authenticity, purity and efficacy of each product and provide the best that could be offered, they were the first company to polyphenol fingerprint each type of product to identify its entire spectrum of nutrients.
Their Whole Fruit Cranberry Powder (which was dried under low temperatures in order to protect the natural integrity and composition of those PACs) is a pure, whole food made from certified non-GMO cranberries – with no chemicals, fillers, additives or processing aids, preservatives, food colors, or added sugars. They use the whole fruit, including its skin, fiber, natural juices and seeds, which collectively have more nutrients and characteristics than any part alone. For example, the insoluble PACs are only found in the 'press cake' which is left after extracting the juice (not in the juice alone), and recent studies have found these insoluble proanthocyanidins also have anti-adhesion activity which can help prevent E. coli from attaching to the bladder.
But if the cranberries alone are not quite getting the job done and you're a woman (because although they may also benefit men in other ways (such as improving their digestive or immune systems), the probiotics in its second formulation are mainly intended to help balance the microflora in the vagina), you can also try the ReCleanse UT Cran-Biotic Urinary Tract Support Kit, which consists of:
- a nearly identical concentrated whole fruit cranberry powder, in one bottle; and,
- a blend of cranberry powder (non-concentrated), d-Mannose, five numbered strains of hardy human-sourced probiotics, and a pre-biotic (FOS) to help sustain them and your other beneficial gut bacteria while these ingredients try to: balance the pH of the vagina, reduce vaginal dryness, reduce the risk of yeast infections, and prevent bladder infections while also benefiting your overall digestive and immune health, in the other.
Either way, it may decrease needing to rely on antibiotics to combat acute infections, which might contribute to antibiotic resistance, leaving you more vulnerable to other illnesses which may not then respond adequately to those drugs.
