Product Notes:
The extracts or 'juices' of Kava Kava roots have been used for many generations in the tropics and South Sea islands, not only for ceremonial purposes, but for relaxing and becoming more sociable. They can have a psychoactive effect (reportedly having a positive influence on all three major neurotransmitter systems associated with relaxation and improving mood: dopamine, serotonin, and GABA), to make you feel calmer, less anxious or irritable, and more talkative, but without impairing your reason, judgment, and senses or leading to hangovers or addiction, like alcohol.
In addition to being a calmative, Kava Kava roots are also used as a sleep aid, often in conjunction with other herbs. But that's not because it makes you drowsy in and of itself, in the recommended dosages; in fact, users attest that you can safely take it even at mid-day without it making you groggy. Rather, again, it's simply because of its relaxing effect, which may include some degree of muscle relaxation and even anticonvulsive effects. Anti-inflammatory effects have also been reported in the scientific literature, as well.
