Probiotics don't generally get much recognition on an individual basis, unless some big company-sponsored clinical study shows a specific benefit from some patented, numbered strain. But thanks to a few influential advocates, L. reuteri is emerging as a superstar, with numerous far-reaching benefits (some of them quite unexpected!) being explored by a variety of independent investigators.

Product Notes:
L. Reuteri Single Strain Live Active Probiotics
L. reuteri is a type of beneficial bacteria that was formerly very prevalent in several parts of people's bodies the world over, but has been become a lot scarcer, except among those who have not been exposed to antibiotics and are consuming non-industrialized diets, such as rural Papua New Guineans. (Note, the L. was originally short for the Lactobacillus genus, but in 2020, that broad family was divided into 24 smaller ones, with Limosilactobacillus being the new genus name for reuteri. Many still use the old name, however.)
A combination of animal studies and human studies and anecdotal reports (the latter mostly based on consuming a yogurt preparation) indicate Reuteri is a safe, well-tolerated probiotic with a surprising range of benefits.
These include several of the usual digestive-system ones – reducing inflammation and helping relieve both diarrhea AND constipation in both children and adults; improving abdominal pain in those with colitis or IBD; helping strengthen the intestinal barrier; and reducing SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) – as well as immune-system enhancing ones (reducing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines while promoting regulatory T cell development and function).
Reuteri even has some potential benefits related to body structure (helping increase muscle mass and bone density, on the one hand, while still having the potential to decrease body fat by enhancing the production of spermidine), and even mood. In particular, it appears to enhance the production of oxytocin, the so-called love hormone, which is not only associated with more empathy and better social relations, but also has physiological effects. Preliminary research also indicates Reuteri also interacts with several other types of hormones which have a presence in the gut.
