In this extremely potent strength, potassium iodide is a thyroid blocking agent for use in nuclear emergencies involving the release of radioiodine. New Roots Herbal Potassium Iodide is suitable for thyroid protection due to radioactive iodine exposure.

Product Notes:

Not for daily use; for nuclear emergency use only.

Potassium iodide (chemical formula KI) is a compound of potassium and a stable form of iodine: it's the same stuff used to iodize table salt (whose iodine content is vanishingly small).

Iodine is something our thyroid gland absorbs from the bloodstream (which can get it from table salt and certain foods, such as kelp) to help it produce its hormones, but it has a finite capacity.

The purpose of KI pills is to fill the thyroid gland with good, stable iodine as soon as possible in the event of a nuclear emergency, and to keep it full until the emergency has passed, in order to prevent it from taking up unstable irradiated iodine that is apt to be acquired from the air, water, or foods after the event.

Related Products: See Radblock. Though not intended for radiation blocking, other iodine supplements include Truehope Nascent Iodine and Biotics Research Liquid Iodine Forte.

KI supplements are reviewed and licensed by Health Canada as natural health products. New Roots Herbal's nuclear emergency use KI supplement has been issued the Health Canada Natural Product Number 80086446.

Ingredients:

Each tablet contains:

65 mg of potassium iodide.

Non-medicinal ingredients: Dicalcium phosphate, microcrystalline cellulose, vegetable stearic acid, croscarmellose sodium, vegetable magnesium stearate, and silicon dioxide.

Non-GMO.

Suggested Usage:

Intended for use in nuclear emergencies involving the release of radioiodine. Use in consultation with your healthcare professional or following the guidance of local authorities.

In the event of a radioactive emergency at a nuclear power plant or conflict zone, the recommended doses by age group are:
- for adults (18 years old and up) to take two tablets, once daily;
- for children between the ages of 4* to 18 should only take one full tablet a day;
- for children younger than that to only be given half a tablet, once daily, provided they are at least two months old; please see directions below*.

Continue to take these amounts daily until the threat is deemed to be over, as directed by public officials.

* For children under 6 years old, crush or dissolve tablets into their food or drink for them; do not allow a child to swallow a tablet whole. Breastfed infants should receive their dose of iodine by direct administration; one should not rely on a protective effect from the breast milk of someone taking these tablets.

Warnings:

This product is not intended for daily or nutritional use, nor is it intended for use as a generic anti-radiation drug. It is for nuclear emergency use only, with it only being effective for specific use during radioiodine exposure.

Keep out of reach of children. Do not take New Roots Potassium Iodide tablets if you are allergic to iodine, or if you have iodine sensitivity, dermatitis herpetiformis, hypocomplementemic vasculitis, or a past or present history of hyperthyroidism. Not for use with pets.

Do not take this compound in greater amounts or more often than directed by a health care practitioner or health care authority. Taking more potassium iodide will not help you, and may actually increase the risk of serious side effects.

Consult a health care practitioner prior to use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have Graves' disease or autoimmune thyroiditis.

Serious risks may be associated with the repeated use of this product. Repeated doses should be supervised by a health care practitioner. Some people may experience sialadenitis (an inflammation of the salivary glands), gastrointestinal disturbances or temporary rash. If symptoms persist or worsen, consult a health care practitioner.

In case of an allergic reaction (swelling of arms, face, legs, lips, tongue, throat, difficulty in breathing, speaking or swallowing; shortness of breath and/or appearance of a severe rash or fever and joint pain), contact a healthcare practitioner or public health authority immediately.
