Product Notes:
Magnesium Citrate - High Absorption
Magnesium has literally hundreds of roles in our bodies, and many of us do not really consume or absorb enough of it from our diets. Signs of deficiency can include either muscular or circulation-oriented ones like muscle weakness, fatigue, twitches, numbness, cramps, tingling, spasms, high blood pressure, dizziness, or irregular heartbeat; or neurological ones like low concentration, headaches, migraines, stress, irritability, or trouble sleeping.
To remedy this, magnesium citrate (a compound produced by first combining magnesium with oxygen to form the inorganic salt magnesium oxide, which then undergoes a chemical reaction with citric acid) has several virtues as a supplemental form:
- it's cheaper to produce and offered at a better price point than some types;
- it dissolves easily in the stomach, which enables the elemental magnesium to be readily absorbed into the bloodstream to carry out its functions; and,
- it helps draw fluids into stools, which helps prevent constipation, but not to the same (and often excessive) extent as magnesium oxide.
Of course, magnesium is not the only mineral playing critical roles in maintaining bones and carrying out muscle functions. Calcium does, as well, and there needs to be a proper ratio between the levels of two circulating in the body (some suggest 2 to 1), but there's a complex relationship between the two for absorption in the intestines and uptake by the cells. Thus, supplementing with one but not the other can upset the balance and lead to a similar cluster of symptoms from a calcium deficiency, which is why many magnesium supplements also include calcium.
Most people DO get enough dietary calcium to meet their needs already, however, so this formula takes a different tack, by adding a relatively small amount of the most bioavailable (L-) form of taurine, instead. That's because, among other things, taurine is able to help balance the levels of certain electrolytes in the body by stabilizing cell membranes and regulating cell volume; in this context, it is referred to as "calcium homeostasis."
