Product Notes:
Copper is an essential trace mineral found in every body tissue; it helps produce red blood cells and connective tissue; it works with iron to metabolize food into hemoglobin, which enables us to use oxygen; it can increase our ability to resist stress and disease, partly by working with enzymes, such as by catalyzing the antioxidant superoxide dismutase; it can even help prevent the loss of pigmentation in the hair and skin.
Left to their own devices, minerals like copper might form chemical bonds with other foods or nutrients it encounters in the digestive tract, including insoluble compounds like certain fibres, which would then all get excreted together rather than absorbed by the intestines. The process of 'chelating' or binding it in advance with a water-soluble, readily absorbed nutrients like citric acid ensures it can be taken up rather than simply expelled by your body.
Although copper is found in many foods, people can develop a deficiency in it nevertheless if they are supplementing with zinc, since the two compete for absorption in the GI tract.
