Product Notes:
The hulls (which start out as green fruits, like avocados or large crabapples) surrounding Black Walnuts contains a compound called juglone, which studies have shown can fight various types of bacteria, mildew, and yeast (such as S. aureus, E. coli, Penicillium sp., Aspergillus sp., and Hansenula sp.), and some other types of fungi (Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Microsporum gypseum). And black walnut doesn't just kill them - it helps cart them off: it also has a role in the other type of elimination, by serving as a mild laxative to help evacuate those dead microbes from the digestive tract.
Moreover, the outer coatings (hulls) of walnuts have astringent properties (they can cause tissue to contract) if they have been taken off and dried while still green, which can help prevent bacterial penetration and inhibit discharges, diarrhea and bleeding. This is thanks to their tannin content, which can also reduce pain and swelling, and dry up excessive bodily fluids such as mucous. They are also one of the few land-based sources of iodine from plants.
