Info: 30 Enteric-Coated Vegetable Capsules (30 Day Supply)
Whether you only really need help for your colon (for constipation, or for a malabsorption problem, e.g.) or are seeking a Lactobacillus-free probiotic for medical reasons, Bifido Builder is a great choice for specialized intestinal support.
Product Notes:
Bifido Builder probiotic formula is a potent blend of five extensively researched strains (the first four being of human origin) which take root in the large rather than the small intestine, delivered in a capsule with a special protective coating to delay their release until they reach there.
There are two main families of beneficial bacteria appearing in oral probiotics: Lactobacillus strains, which colonize in the small intestine to help with things like diarrhea or lactose intolerance; and Bifidobacterium strains (or 'Bifido', for short), which congregate on the walls of the large intestine, to help it absorb some of the remaining nutrients not captured by the small intestine (especially from complex carbohydrates and fiber) and produce more vitamins to improve immune function.
While many formulations (including several from New Roots themselves) feature a blend of the two, some people may be advised to avoid Lactobacillus strains altogether, including those with Short Bowel Syndrome (which is when the small intestine is much shorter than normal, which can occur naturally but is usually due to surgery for conditions like Crohn's disease), which also adversely affects the immune system, and those taking certain medications that decrease immune system activity, including corticosteroids, azathioprine, cyclosporine, prednisone, and more.
In both cases, without a fully functioning immune system in place to prevent it, there's a risk that the influx of live bacteria with an affinity for the small intestine may end up over-breeding or causing infections.
To shore up the ecosystem of beneficial bacteria in the large intestine without disturbing the one in the small intestine, Bifido-Builder provides five types of Bifido strains, including one (infantis) known to help digest human milk, several that have been found to reduce the inflammation associated with gluten sensitivity and celiac disease (bifidum, breve, infantis, and longum), and one (the specific HN019 animalis strain) backed by clinical studies showing it can improve immune function in healthy older adults (it "significantly enhanced PMN phagocytic capacity and NK cell tumoricidal activity in the healthy elderly population") and decrease the incidence of diarrhea and relieve gut dysmotility related disorders such as functional constipation.
To ensure that these helpful strains survive the trek through the harsh stomach acid and make it all the way to the large intestines in sufficient quantity to retain all of their rated potency, Bifido Builder feature GPS™, which is short for Gastric Protective System: a special type of vegetable capsule with an enteric-coating made entirely from natural ingredients to protect the contents from stomach acids so they can deliver a minimum of 42 Billion live active probiotics all the way to where they are needed.
