Product Notes:
ATA Mg - The Brain Magnesium
Fully Reacted for Higher Bioavailability
Magnesium helps maintain the stability of cell membranes and is critically involved in literally hundreds of enzymatic reactions in our bodies and all our organs need it - including the brain. There, it's needed to help produce cellular energy (ATP needs to bind with it to work), and to help regulate the signaling of certain neurotransmitters like GABA and glutamate, and to help maintain proper levels of calcium in brain cells (which is needed for signaling between nerve cells), among other things.
However, for various reasons, the magnesium levels in our brains tends to diminish as we age – including the fact that not all forms of dietary or supplemental magnesium are very good at crossing the blood-brain barrier (BBB) to even get there. This new type, however, is particularly adept at that, because its magnesium has formed tight chemical bonds (i.e., has been "Fully Reacted") with acetyltaurine, to create a patented new compound called Magnesium N-Acetyltaurinate (with the molecular formula C8H16MgN2O8S2) which IS very good at crossing over to the brain.
Acetyltaurine is an amino sulfonic acid which is present in wine grapes (and which we produce ourselves as a metabolite in our blood serum), which is both structurally and functionally related to taurine, which has many benefits of its own and was already known to work well with magnesium to help regulate muscle function, assist the digestive system, and aid the transportation of the magnesium itself.
And in the context of the brain, it turns out the molecular combination of Acetyltaurine with Magnesium (i.e., ATA Mg) has the right 'shape' to be able to bind itself to the NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) neural receptors that normally take up glutamate: an excitatory neurotransmitter that's also involved in neuroplasticity (where the nervous system establishing new connections or changes activities in response to experiences or injuries). That new competition between ATA Mg and glutamate may help reduce a number of neurodegenerative and cognitive disorders associated with those NMDA receptors, including stress, anxiety, memory problems, and migraines.
ATA Mg is Gentle on the Stomach
An added virtue to this combination is that, thanks to how well it gets absorbed by our digestive tract (the intestinal bioavailability of its magnesium content is from 20 to 50% higher than some forms of magnesium salt) and the preponderance of the n-acetyltaurine content (which comprises 93% of the compound), relatively little actual magnesium is required to achieve those benefits. That means it's far less likely to cause GI discomfort or loose stools than other magnesium supplements, and there are no known interactions with any other medications you might be on.
In addition to it's cognitive and stress-relieving benefits, ATA Mg's developer has found it can also help in other ways, such as by helping with migraines or brain injuries, and relieving menopausal symptoms.
