EPA and DHA

OmegaGenics comes in several varieties, most of which are named after the total amount of EPA and DHA they have combined, per capsule (or per tablespoon, for the liquid variety). While they all help support cognitive and cardiovascular health to some degree, they vary both in their total concentration of Omega 3, and in the relative amounts of those two major constituents: EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). In addition, the Mega 10 type also adds another type of omega fatty acid - Omega-7 - in the form of Palmitoleic acid, a monounsaturated fatty acid that can help provide energy and may reduce your risks of heart disease or stroke.

EPA and DHA both have important functions, with DHA thought to be directed more at improving central nervous system and brain functions, while higher concentrations of EPA may be better at helping cardiovascular health and reducing inflammation.

The first two types currently on offer here both have the same amount of DHA per soft gelatin capsule: 290 mg. But they differ not only in the total amount of fish oil per capsule (and thus likely in the size of their capsules), but also in the amount of EPA, with it comprising 430 mg (for 60% of the total EPA-DHA milligrams) in the 720 type, and 710 mg (for 71% of the combined EPA-DHA total) in the 1000 type.

The recommended uses for either type are to support the development of the brain, eyes, and nerves in children up to 12 years of age; or to help support cognitive and cardiovascular health and help reduce serum triglycerides; or to help reduce the pain of rheumatoid arthritis in adults, when used in conjunction with conventional therapy.

EPA-DHA 1000

But for those who do suffer from rheumatoid arthritis or have other inflammatory disorders, the 1000 type providing 710 milligrams of EPA may be preferable. This type is perfect for those on typical diets that tend to be high in omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids but very low in omega-3s. The imbalance between these various omegas can be one of the main drivers for much of the inflammation that occurs in our bodies.

MEGA 10

Finally, there is also a third type available here, Mega 10: which might have been called EPA-DHA 500 (for its total amount of those) Plus, but likely got its name from the fact that it adds Omega 7 to Omega 3 to result in 10. Its omega-7 fatty acid is supplied by palmitoleic acid (in a purified form which has been processed to remove the palmitic acid from it). The two recommended uses for this type are:

1) to help reduce serum triglycerides or triacylglycerols (studies have shown that the daily intake of fish oil can reduce plasma triglycerides by up to 40%!); and,

2) to help reduce blood levels of CRP (C-reactive protein), which is an inflammatory marker protein – a known risk factor for cardiovascular disease. (A recent double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study* found a daily dose of this amount of palmitoleic acid can reduce the average plasma levels of high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) by 44%.) [Published in the Journal of Clinical Lipidology 2014.]

OmegaGenics EPA-DHA 300 & 500

Metagenics also makes two other purely Omega-3 types which are in the same 60/40 EPA to DHA ratio as the 720 type described above – OmegaGenics EPA-DHA 300 and EPA-DHA 500 – in correspondingly different total amounts per capsule. They come in a 270 softgel capsule sizes for the EPA-DHA 500, and 120 or 240 softgel capsule sizes for the EPA-DHA 500 – and there are also enteric coated softgel versions of the 500 strength, as well. There is also a liquid version in a 150 ml amber bottle called OmegaGenics EPA-DHA 2400 which provides 1410 mg EPA and 990 mg DHA, which is almost at that same 60/40 ratio. Metagenics is careful to obtain the fish used for these products from a sustainable source to make sure we can protect not only our own health but those species and the ocean at the same time, and has an independent party test them to ensure that they are pure and free from any metals and environmental toxins.
