Dynamic Standing

Many of us stand for hours on end on hard surfaces without really shifting our feet or weight that much, which is hard on the joints and leads to fatigue. Others just sit nearly all day, which can be even worse.

From the makers of kybun footwear, the kybun mat (originally sold as the kyBounder) can be of tremendous help for both groups -- providing a cushioning surface which encourages motion. This dynamic standing helps develop muscles, improve balance, coordination, and joint and posture problems among those who already need to stand at work or use a standing desk. For those who don't, the range of fitness benefits are a great reason to switch from sitting to standing throughout much of the day.

Rebound Effect

This soft, springy mat doesn't only cushion the feet, it encourages you to move about more, both for fun (it's sort of a mini-trampoline) and for exercise. Whenever you notice your body is becoming tired, just bounce, walk or jog in place for 20–30 seconds. It also leads you to automatically make minute movements to continue to maintain your balance on what is essentially a porous surface like a foam pillow, which you sink into while stepping on it.

Unlike other types of mats, the "crumple zone" on the porous kybun mat is quite reactive: when you shift position, the area you were on quickly springs back. That "rebound effect" causes your muscles to alternate between tensing and relaxing as you exercise the muscles in your feet, legs and trunk, which can improve your balance, coordination, and all-round fitness without taking up any extra time at all.

Reduce Muscle Strain and Fatigue

The kybun mat thus enables you to improve your fitness during each working hour. The constant motion on the soft, springy surface trains your deep inner muscles and relieves stress, and has also helped many people eliminate back pain. And standing on it rather than just sitting also ensures you feel less tired and sluggish after eating lunch, and may even make you less prone to catching a cold.

Standing dynamically on the kybun mat offers countless benefits and makes you feel like you are on a trampoline, which is simply great fun. And in the workplace, while employees can benefit from these advantages themselves, employers can also benefit from significant increases in productivity and retention.

Available in a Choice of Thicknesses; Which is Right for You?

Kybun mats are all made of the same soft, springy material, but come in three different depths. The basic principle, of course, is the thicker the mat, the more intense its rebound effect will be.

* The thickest version is 6 cm (2-3/8") deep. It's suitable for general daily use, whether at home, or for athletic training, or at the office, especially if you have no major health, balance, or musculature issues to begin with.

You can get this 6cm depth in a mat with a removable washable fabric cover (in either Bordeaux [red)] or Anthracite [grey]) in a choice of lengths: nearly a meter (a little over a yardstick) long, which is suitable for moving about at most standing desks or workstations, and big enough to do some other types of exercises on; or nearly two meters long (about 6 foot 4), which is suitable for working at longer counters, or for practicing walking.

But if you're using it where it's apt to get wet or dirty, please note, you can also get kybun mats with a silver-coloured cover with a rubber coating, which is resistant to both water and dirt - including in six cm depths.

But please note, kybun advises that you should not wear shoes when using any of the 6 centimetre thick mats, to avoid destabilizing your ankle joints.

* The intermediate version is 4 cm (about 1-1/2") thick. This depth is recommended for those who may find the thicker version more challenging, whether that's senior citizens, children, or individuals with injuries, or with equilibrium, balance, or dizziness problems. Again, you should only use your bare feet or wear socks when using kybun mats of this depth, which can provide a gentle, mid-level workout.

* Finally, kybun also produces a variety of 2 cm (about 3/4") thick mats in various sizes and covers. Even with just a 2 cm thickness, these soft, springy mats can relieve the strain on your whole body, protect your joints, and prevent leg fatigue, especially when you do a few basic exercises throughout the course of the day.

These can be made available upon request, but please note, rather than being used primarily for standing workstations, they might be best for those recovering from an injury, surgery, or illness (such as a stroke) who need therapy and rehabilitation but are not ready for too much of a springy, rebound effect.

These removable fabric-covered mats are also made both in much shorter (46 cm, or 18 inches long) and longer lengths (496 cm, or 16 feet) in all three thicknesses (2, 4, and 6 cm), although the longer ones are only available in the Bordeaux colour. These can also be brought in by special order; please contact us for details. In addition, replacement fabric covers are available by special request in both colours, for all sizes except the 496 cm lengths.

Walkolution kybun treadmill

Like many of their air-cushioned kybun shoes, kybun mats are made in Switzerland. Shipping is included to most locations in Canada, but delivery of some models may take up to a few weeks, as not all available product combinations are in stock at all times.

Alternatively, you might also be interested in the new manual treadmills outfitted with workstation desks which feature a series of kybun mat-style slats built into the belt, which are produced in partnership with the German company Walkolution. For customers in Canada, those, too, can be ordered from Aviva by special order; please contact us for options and details.

Suggested Usage:

The kybun mat is not only an ideal complement to a standing desk in an office environment, or for working behind counters or workbenches in other work situations, but it can also be used various ways around the home. The kybun mat is great for multi-tasking while standing doing things like ironing, cooking, chatting on the phone, watching TV, playing video games, and of course you can also sit or kneel on it to do yoga or other stretching exercises.

Care Instructions:

The red or grey fabric covers can be removed and washed at 40 degrees Celsius. The soft elastic mat within should not be washed, however, or it will lose its optimum effectiveness.

The material of the kybun mat has been manufactured and optimized for its exceptional characteristics: linear, elastic and resilient behaviour, high and fast springback, and slow material fatigue, even under everyday exposure. When used for 8 hours/day at normal weight (BMI 18-25) and with good care, its average durability is approximately 2 years. For every 10% above normal weight, these values decrease by about 10%, or by about 50% for every 50% above normal weight.
