If you regularly or even occasionally dye your hair, you know the process usually involves exposure to harsh chemicals and toxins such as ammonia. And even for those not allergic to these materials, exposure to such toxins isn't healthy. Herbatint's dye designers have been developing more natural hair products since the 1960s, and their continuing development of such products in the decades since is a testimony to their success.

Colours: Some of the names of the colours naming conventions may not match your initial expectations: particularly some with 'Blonde' in the name (such as the ones joined with 'Copper,' which are what North Americans generally call red, and the British call ginger). Herbatint: Find Your True Colour

Looking at a colour chart, find the N color that is closest to your natural shade. For the most accuracy compare with your roots and hairline.

Now you can determine your natural level (the number). The numbers run from 1-10. 1 is the darkest. 10 is the lightest.

Herbatint is very low peroxide. This provides enough lightening power to go one, possibly two shades lighter. The darker shades will lighten only one shade, i.e. if your natural level is 4 you can go up to a 5.

Now you can choose a tone (gold, red, natural brown or blonde). Remember for best results you can only use a tone that is at your level (number) or one higher or lower.

N = Natural tones. The N's give optimum coverage on gray or white hair. If you prefer to add a tone you must use some of the N (to completely cover your gray) to the tone you chose.

R = Red. The R's are a rich, cool based red, ideal for people with olive skin tones.
They do not provide complete gray coverage alone.

D = Gold Beige. The D's provide natural looking golden brown or blonde highlights.
They do not provide complete gray coverage alone.

M = Mahogany. The M's are ideal for adding reddish brown highlights to dull hair,
just enough excitement, but very natural. They do not provide
complete gray coverage alone.

C = Ash. The C's counteract red and brassiness for a cooler, more natural color.
Of course, it does not provide complete gray coverage alone.

DR = Copper Gold. The DR's add a brighter red to light blonde hair. They will not provide complete gray coverage alone.

When covering gray hair, you must use some N. The more gray you have, the more N you should use. For example: if you have up to 30% gray, use half as much N as your tonal colour; 30% to 60% gray, use half and half; 60% to 100% gray, use twice as much N as your tonal color. To be sure you will love the colour, read the directions and do a strand test before colouring your whole head. Don't forget your bowl and brush for the best application.
