The three types of ingredients in Cholesto-Less – Plant Sterol Esters, Red Yeast Rice, and Ubiquinol – all have recognized cardiovascular benefits, and of course are also sold individually by other brands, as well. But to our knowledge, Healthology is the only one licensed in Canada that combines them in a single formula for a synergistic effect.
Plant or phytosterols are plants' versions of the lipids (or waxy, fat-like substances) called cholesterol in mammals. As you can see in the first video animation, they are similar enough in chemical structure or 'shape' to get taken up by various receptors in our intestines whose job is to absorb cholesterol to redirect it back into our bloodstream (to make its way to the liver to form bile). This leads to more dietary cholesterol and spent/decomposed bile being excreted rather than recycled, and since our bodies can't use the plant sterols in the same way, they wind up just being excreted rather than remaining in circulation. Studies have shown they plant sterols can reduce harmful LDL cholesterol by an average of 15% (and total cholesterol by 10%).
Similarly, Red Yeast Rice has a comparable net effect. But instead of competing for its reabsorption in the intestines, it works by inhibiting the body's own production of cholesterol in the liver, similar to the way the statin prescription medications do, but without their side effects.
Last but not least, Ubiquinol is the active, ready-to-use form of CoQ10: a powerful antioxidant that can help heal the damage in our arteries caused by high cholesterol, and also helps generate energy in cells throughout the body, including, of course, the heart.
