According to Ayurvedic traditions, Shilajit is one of the most potent natural tonics for the body. Also known as mineral pitch, it's composed of organic plant material that has been compressed by Himalayan rocks for hundreds of years and contains nutrients (including 85 types of minerals in ionic form), antioxidants, amino acids, and phytochemicals.
Product Notes:
Shilajit is a humic compound, the term "humus" referring to the material formed when soil microorganisms decompose organic material into elements usable by plants.
Shilajit is also high in fulvic acid, which contains as many as 70 chelated vitamins which enable our bodies to absorb nutrients better and has the ability to neutralize free radicals and detoxify the body.
Other traditional functions of Shilajit include increasing energy, memory, mood, balancing blood sugar levels, as well as optimizing oxygenation and the body's natural antioxidant response.
Shilajit can also improve muscle function, not only in healthy people - a fairly recent study of recreationally active men in their early 20s found a high dose of half a gram a day helped them become more resistant to fatigue and retain more muscular strength when performing leg extensions - but also in overweight people, as shown by a 2016 clinical trial in which the Shilajit that class I obese Americans took to accompany their exercise was found to promote skeletal muscle adaptation via the genes that control muscle mechanotransduction properties, elasticity, repair, and regeneration.
Studies have also found it helped revitalize the skin and the blood vessels supporting it, in middle-aged obese women, and increased testosterone levels in middle-aged men. There are even indications it can help improve male fertility, especially if it's related to the exposure to chemicals like cadmium (from smoking).
Naming Note
The term "Shilajit" is derived from Sanskrit word ‘Śilājatu’: a compound of ‘Śilā’ (which means: rock) and ‘Jatu’ (a blackish brown substance). It also goes by other spellings (Shilajeet) and names, including: Momiai (or Momial Faqurul Yahood), mummy, mumie, and mineral pitch.
