Product Notes:
If your drinking water is not being supplied by a fully reliable muncipal water treatment facility that purifies it with chlorine or chloramine (if you get it from a well or a lake, for example), or if you have reason to suspect the pipes in your own building or neighborhood have amassed bacteria in them, you should disinfect it.
Untreated water can contain a whole host of pathogens including fecal voliform and E. coli, which a germicidal ultraviolet water purification system like this can render harmless. Ultraviolet light effectively kills bacteria, viruses, mold, algae, yeast, cysts (including giardia and cryptosporidium), some volatile organic compounds and other biological contaminants. And, unlike chlorine or chloramines (toxic chemicals used to kill micro-organisms), UV-C sterilization systems do not add any potentially poisonous or harmful chemicals into your drinking water or adversely affect its taste or smell.
Of course, this unit does require an AC electrical power source to operate, but its bulb only uses twelve watts of power, so it would not be very taxing on a generator or even a solar power supply. If it's being used at a cottage, you may want to unplug it when it's not going to be uses for more than a week, to maximize the life of the bulb, which needs to be replaced after about 9000 hours of continuous use (which would be about a solid year of daily use, for most). (It uses a model EL12L Replacement Bulb, also from Excelight.)
Specifications: 1 Gallon Per Minute @ 30mJ/cm2 Flow Rate, 1/4" I/O, 11 inches long; can be mounted either horizontally or vertically.
The system comes with a UV lamp (which ships in the white cardboard tube shown at the front of the box, for protection); a sleeve to insert that bulb in; a ballast (to power it); a 304 stainless steel housing; 2 fittings to attach to the water supply and tap, 2 clips to attach the unit to the top rack of a water filtration housing (not included); and a user/installation manual.
