Vitamin D has many important functions in our bodies. It helps maintain our bones and teeth, partly by controlling how calcium and phosphorus are metabolized and helping them get absorbed in the small intestine, so people who may be deficient in it such as the elderly, those who get little sun exposure, or who live in northern latitudes or infants, or even people with dark skin may be advised to take it as a supplement to reduce the risk of fractures induced by falls. Its other roles include regulating insulin levels, supporting lung function and cardiovascular health, and supporting the health of the immune system, brain and nervous system.

See, we're supposed to make vitamin D from the sunlight. The thing is, we wear sunscreen, and even SPF 8 blocks vitamin D by about 90%.

There are vitamin D receptors in every cell of our body, every kind of tissue or organ. You might not realize that vitamin D is very important for a healthy mood. You see, you can't make serotonin, the feel-good neurotransmitter, without vitamin D. So, the only real way to know if you have enough vitamin D is to test your level. Next time you go get a check-up, have your vitamin D level measured. Lifelong and body wide, vitamin D is very important.
