Batana Oil may be one of the few recent wellness trends driven by social media that really is nearly everything it's cracked up to be. Produced from the seeds of a specific type of palm tree, it's rich in Vitamins A and E and Omega-6 fatty acids to nourish, moisturize and protect both the skin and hair, to leave them more flexible and pliable and less prone to cracking, breakage, and frizz.

Product Notes:

Although it may be a bit of a stretch to say it can help regrow your hair, by all accounts, Batana Oil can help preserve and improve it, by: nourishing the follicles; hydrating the hair and improving its elasticity and shine; strengthening individual strands to protect against breakage and split ends; and providing antioxidant protection from harmful UV rays and other environmental stressors.

Be Sure it's the Genuine Article

There are a lot of products on the market being billed as Batana Oil, at the moment, with a considerable range in price point. But if you dig a little into the reviews and various videos and sites, you will find that many of the lower-priced items are not as they seem. Some are from an entirely different kind of palm tree: the Elaeis guineensis from Africa (and Southeast Asia), rather than the Elaeis oleifera from tropical Central and Southern America, particularly Honduras. Others may have some genuine Batana Oil, alright, but only as one of many ingredients (which may include water), rather than the sole ingredient.

For the non-liquid varieties like this, some tell-tale signs that it's been adulterated are: if it's a creamier texture rather than a more solid butter at room temperature; if it's more yellow or green than brown in colour; if it does not melt into and get absorbed by your skin right away but just sits on top; or if it doesn't become entirely liquid if you microwave it for about 30 seconds.

Maiga's is the right kind, sourced from wild palm nuts growing in Honduran rainforests that have been picked and extracted by the local Miskito people using traditional methods.

Ingredients:

100% Pure Unrefined Batana Oil (Elaeis oleifera kernel oil), sourced from Honduras, through Fair Trade practices.

Contains no added chemicals, parabens, sulfates, preservatives, or additives. Suitable for Vegans (cruelty-free).

Suggested Usage:

As a conditioner and scalp treatment: First wash your hair as normal, then scoop some (about a quarter size) of the Batana Oil butter into your hand, rub your hands together to warm it up to make it easier to spread (if needed), and massage it into your hair (especially the roots and tips) and scalp. Rub it in well into your skin, as this promotes circulation and stimulates the hair follicles. Leave it on for three to five minutes before rinsing out.

Alternatively, you can just apply it to wet hair and leave it on as an overnight treatment (wear a cap to protect your pillow), and rinse it out and/or shampoo normally in the morning (a "Pre-Poo" treatment). Some even use it as a leave-in conditioner, and don't mind that its brown colour may temporarily darken your own hair colour, but as the presenter in these videos notes, if you have patches of gray, you may want to avoid putting the product on those areas if you'll be going out with it on.

There are also additional suggestions for using it for hair care in this second video.

For skincare: Apply a small amount to your face or other areas of your body, on clean, slightly damp skin, either before bed (so it can work overnight on dry or combination skin), or as the first step in your cleaning routine, followed by your regular cleanser (for oily skin). Gently massage into the skin using circular motions.

Note, there is a slight possibility that you may be sensitive to Batana Oil (there can be rare redness, itching, or mild skin irritation reactions), so it's advisable do a patch test, first. (Just put some on your inner forearm and wait 48 hours to see how your skin responds.)

Store container in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat. Use within 6 to 12 months after opening.
